The Need to Help Islam and the Community

Commentary of the Hadith: "The Need to Help Islam and the Community"

Text and Translation

On the authority of Mughirah ibn Syu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him), The Messenger of Allah (may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: There shall always be from among my ummah, helping one another and cooperating until the Last Day, and they shall be victorious.

(It was related by Bukhari)

On the authority of Thauban (may Allah be pleased with him), as related by Muslim: They help one another to uphold truth, they shall not be defeated by those who try to make them fail until the Last Day and they shall be victorious.

Discussion

1. There shall always be those among the Muslim community who will work to uphold truth and help one another. At the same time there shall be others from among those outside their community and within them who will try to disrupt and make them fail.

2. The bearers of truth shall be victorious as long as they are united and help one another. The conflict between the forces of good and the forces of evil will last until the End. The upholders of truth should not despair or feel frustrated in facing challenges and obstacles. They should put more effort and work vigourously in carrying out their duties and responsibilities.

3. There are times when the people of evil are in special positions, are honoured or in the halls of power whereas the people of truth who are struggling hard to establish justice are left out in the cold. These are signs of the times.

4. Da’wah or reaching out, calling to religious and moral values are sometimes shunned and ridiculed. On the other hand, decadent culture, crass materialism and selfish unbridled desires are welcomed and tolerated.

5. Religion and its prime role and importance is diminished and made out only as a ritual fulfilling some mundane function. The scholars and the knowledgeable in Islam are condemned and denied their roles or left out unappreciated in the daily affairs of society.

6. The Muslim has a duty to his parents, his family and to those in need. It is also beneficial for the Muslim to help the cause of Islam and his community. Although the Muslim can serve Allah s.w.t. and the community through individual efforts, it is more useful and effective if the effort is combined and shared with others. Encouraging and supporting one another makes their goals more achievable.

7. Some examples of useful services in the Islamic cause especially as a message for the young:

• Organizing classes or lectures to improve the knowledge of Islam and the Qur’an.

• Helping with Islamic projects and making improvements in the community.

• Working with others for just and moral causes.

• Raising money for useful causes to benefit the community near and far.

• Organizing workers and volunteers to benefit the needs of the community and those individuals in need.

• Working together to reach out, providing information on Islam to non-Muslims.

From the Qur’an:

Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong: they are the ones to attain felicity.
(ali Imran 3:104)

The believers, men and women, are protectors, one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practice regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His Mercy: for Allah is Exalted in Power. Wise.
(Al Tawbah 9:71)

…Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not in sin and rancour…( al Ma’idah 5:2)

Lessons

The hadith teaches Muslims to be with those who fight for truth and to work hard to establish it.

As bearers of truth, there is no disappointment or lost of hope in fulfilling responsibilities and in encountering times of hardship and calamities. The Muslim has to have faith and confidence in a victorious outcome.

The religion of Islam is the religion of truth, it has been guaranteed success by Allah s.w.t. until the Last Day. The movement for Islam, for da’wah and reaching out shall exist until the End. While on the other side, the movement for evil shall oppose it.
